To Vicksburg With Love

I hope you all have marked your calendars for noon Tuesday, February 14, at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center. It will be the annual "To Vicksburg With Love." Plans are still being finalized, but Frances is planning a fashion show harking back to yesteryear along with period music. It should be great fun. Palmertree's is catering and tickets are $12.00. PLEASE NOTE: This will be our Founder's Day meeting, so I hope to see lots of you there!!

Joan Morgan called last week to say that Delta Chapter, after a lot of hard work, had cancelled plans to host Founder's Day in March. Several of their members were going to be out of town (including Joan) and they couldn't find a suitable apace with adequate accessibility and low cost. We thank them for all their hard work but we will celebrate PAK and one another in a couple of weeks.

Call SCHC today to make your reservations for the 14th. Space fills up fast because word has gotten around as to what a fun event this always is.

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas, and now we are starting a brand new year , 2012. I wonder how many checks that I will date incorrectly until I get the hang of it. Anyway I wish all of you a fantastic 2012.

The old year really flew by so quickly. Let's take the time this year to be more active in our PI ALPHA KAPPA chapters, I've heard that some of the attendance has been low and that we really need to perk up.-Now is the time to get the ball rolling and attend every meeting.

"To Vicksburg With Love" is just around the corner - on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2012-- at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center. The food and the entertainment have always been so delightful. Our thanks goes to Frances Koury for that.

We will also be getting ready for Founder's Day in March. Details are being worked out and we’ll get them to you later.

Let us make 2012 an exciting and successful year for PI ALPHA KAPPA. Remember that it takes your effort for us to reach the stars!

News from the Chapters……

Denver Delta

There was no meeting in December.

President Elly Danko spent the holidays with her son and his family. She is busy planning her next trip to Europe.

Betty Shea’s husband passed away on November 25th.

Walburga Salazar had not heard from her family in Germany and decided to call to check in with them. She was saddened to find out that her brother in-law had passed away. The family hadn’t called because they did not want to deliver the bad news during the holidays. He had been suffering from Parkinson and Alzheimer diseases, but he died of a heart attack.

Isolde Meyer baked Christmas cookies with her daughter, Heidi. They baked for two days and packaged 30 plates with the goodies for friends and neighbors.

Vicksburg Alpha Beta

From Marie Hernandez: Holiday greetings from Brookdale Place in Birmingham. It has been nap time each afternoon after all the festivities. Christmas day was a cold raining one but spirits were high with the family group at Susan and Jeff' Rays house for a Christmas Brunch. After a tasty Bloody Mary we indulged in all the delicious food highlighted in the Southern Living magazines. My bridge friends in Vicksburg will be disappointed that I have only played once since I have been here. Too many things going on. I still do not have everything in order. My old TV was too big for the small den so I had to buy another one. That has taken time and was delivered just after Christmas. I am ashamed to admit it I brought a small Christmas tree with me, Susan bought me a larger one and the box of ornaments are still in the middle of the floor. Thats my easy way to undecorate!! Best wishes to all of you for the coming year. I hope to hear of great progress for PAK in membership for 2012. God Bless you all.

Frances Koury is enjoying her second great-grandchild. Stephen Glenn Koury is now three months old. Of course, he is the cutest child and beautiful. Couldn't help but think of the miracle of birth at this season and the special birth of the "Christ Child," God's greatest gift.

I also enjoyed the special week in early December when Kathy came home. She had just gotten back from Hong Kong, China and Korea. Her job takes her to so many fascinating places, so i do my arm chair traveling through her travels. She always fills our home with excitement and joy and made even those gloomy, dreary, rainy days bright. She even left here and went to the British Virgin Islands for a week! Connie and David had us all out to their home at Christmas. About 20 people and food, food, and more food - and a great time by all! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and that the New Year will be filled with joy, love and God's continued blessings.

Pam Gee enjoyed a visit with her sister-in-law who traveled from Iowa to visit in late October. They toured Vicksburg and Natchez and drove to Atlanta to visit her son Scott and his family. She enjoyed Thanksgiving in Atlanta and Christmas split between Ridgeland (daughter Cathy & granddaughter Anna Catherine) and Richmond, VA (son Chris and grandchildren Michael and Addison.)

Leigh Cook celebrated her birthday at the Grand Hotel at Point Clear, Alabama in November. She will also travel to Nashville to watch Mississippi State University play in the Music City Bowl.

Vicksburg Delta

At the October meeting we collected food for the Community Cupboard. Members met for lunch at Martin's at Midtown in November, where gifts for the CAP center and show boxes for Samaritan's Purse were collected. The Christmas Pot Luck Dinner was held in Josephine Peterson's home. Her beautiful holiday decorations put us in the Yuletide Spirit. Members prepared their favorite recipes and a rousing Dirty Santa game concluded the meeting. May the Blessings of the season continue in 2012 and bring Peace and Good Health to all.

In November Hal and Joan Morgan drove most of the Blue Ridge Parkway on their trip through North Carolina and Virginia. Most of the colorful foliage was well past its peak, giving a clear view of the majestic scenery. We stopped in Stuart's Draft for shopping in the Amish Cheese Store and furniture shop. Daughter Michelle flew into Williamsburg and joined us for a reunion with Joan's brother and his family. The women enjoyed shopping at the large outlet malls and along the historic Duke of Gloucester Street, followed by a family tour of the Williamsburg Winery. Once back home, we spent a fun afternoon when we took our grandchildren to see New Stage's production of "Annie". They enjoyed having the whole Morgan clan, plus three dogs, home for Christmas.

Josephine Peterson enjoyed a wonderful holiday in South Carolina. She was joined by her son John from Arizona for the drive up. On their way, they had a visit with Will’s family. They enjoyed the grandchildren: Skylar, 11, Ella, 10, Anders, almost 6, and Aspen, 3 ½. Christmas is always fun through the eyes of little ones. Uncle John was the hit of the week since he a major player of Wii and EBox video games. As usual, John and Josephine attended midnight service on Christmas Eve and again celebrated the wonder of the birth of Jesus Christ. They enjoyed seeing Jodi’s mom’s log home (almost completed) and enjoyed spending time with Jodi’s family. On their way home, they had an early lunch and delightful visit with John’s godfather Frank Townsend, and wife, Marvel. Some of you may remember them from First Presbyterian in the late 70’s and early 80’s. John and Josephine celebrated New Year’s before John returned to the desert.

Helene Benson traveled to Atlanta in November to see her oldest nephew, Matthew, participate in senior night activities at Collins Hill High School. Matthew plays trumpet in the band and was honored in a pregame ceremony. She also finished her coursework for her Master of Theological Studies at Spring Hill. She is on track to complete her comprehensive exams in March and will graduate in May. She is excited to put her new education into practice at St. Michael Catholic Church. All of Helene’s family (siblings, spouses and grandchildren) gathered at her parents in Baton Rouge to celebrate Christmas. It was the first time they had all been together in over twenty years.

Member-at-large Peggy Ward writes: “Early in October, Dan and I journeyed by auto to Lancaster County, PA. Our first stop was Shaker Village near Parkersburg, WV to spend the night at the historical, beautiful Blennerhasset Hotel. After many stops at antique shops, we arrived at our final destination, the Bella Vista Bed & Breakfast in Akron, PA. During our week in Akron, we took many day trips to surrounding towns, including Bird-in-the-Hand, PA, and Hersey, PA (yum, yum!) I loved the Amish quilt shops and passed many black buggies pulled by trotting horses. We ate dinner with an Amish family at their farm. The widowed Amish mother opens her home to selected guests (selected by the B & B innkeepers.) There were four couples at the table enjoying the delicious meal. After the meal, we all departed and then she served her family. They were milking and doing other farm chores while we were eating. Our trip home included a tour of Gettysburg and a stop at an apple farm. Back home we are getting ready for the holidays (well, I am, while Dan is away on his annual hunting trip!)

Vicksburg Omega

Becky Towne’s Mother passed away and was buried on December 17, 2011, in Yazoo City. Please keep her and family in your prayers as they morn their loss.

Joan Donovan – Joan and Mike Donovan, their granddaughter, Jennifer, and friends from Tulsa, OK, traveled to Baton Rouge, LA on Oct 14-16 to a model airplane contest. Monday, October 17-20, the traveled to the Smokey Mountains to see the leaves change colors. The colors were at their peak and so beautiful. They also saw a lot of wildlife. The weather was perfect October 21-23 when they traveled to an airplane contest in Huntersville, SC. It was their first trip there and was very nice. They met some new friends. Everyone had a really good time.

Marian Love Phillips is looking forward to a hunting trip to the famous Christmas Place Plantation and Hunting Club in the MS. Delta to deer/hog hunt for a few days after Christmas. It’s a family owned hunting camp by the Howell’s and is located near Eden, MS, with 2,500 acres of land and a 40 acre lake. It also has eleven Indian Mounds on the site.

Ina Lott Whittington – Please keep Ina’s daughter, Rhonda, in your prayers. She has recently been declared legally blind by her Dr. and he has advised her to apply for disability. She can see a little more but not enough to read and drive or go back to work.

June Emerson spent the Christmas holiday with her son and daughter-in-law in Pearl, MS.

Vera Brown’s grandson, David Walker, just produced his first film at Watkins School of Art and Design in Nashville, TN. It was a documentary on Robert Johnson, who was a Jazz Singer and Guitarist. He won four first places and Best overall Film and best in Show. They are really proud of him and his accomplishments.

Anita and Jim Hossley's daughter, Marcia, and family visited them for their Christmas holidays. Marcia, husband Bruce, and children Rob, Meg, and Mary, live in Evans, Georgia which is a suburb of Augusta. Marcia's husband and son went deer hunting in Amarillo, Texas, Christmas afternoon. We had a wonderful time celebrating Christmas with our three children Matt, Marcia, and Margaret, and their families.

Janey Seabergh wrote: “In November, we visited our son Nick, who is the executive chef at Giardinia's in Greenville. We got to sample Nick's efforts as well as those of numerous other chefs at "Boudin and Beer", sponsored by Emeril Lagasse to benefit his charitable foundation. All the food was wonderful but ...guess what ... Our favorite was Nick's ginger sage sausage biscuits with apple butter. Christmas was really fun as we went to Salem, Oregon, for a Christmas time visit with our daughter, Hilary and grand-daughters, Madeline and Sophia. We spent four days in the mountains near Mount Hood where the girls got a chance to go skiing and snowboarding. We spent the next week with them in Salem and had an early Christmas celebration on the 20th. We returned to Vicksburg on the 23rd and Nick came down to celebrate Christmas day with us. Now I have to rest up and get ready for a great New Year.”

Our Christmas Party - We had our Omega Chapter, Christmas Party at Roca’s on Wednesday, December 7, 2011. We really enjoyed ourselves and were accompanied by our mates/guest. After we ate we got to exchange our gifts with our secret sister and drew names for our new secret sister for the coming year. Prayers Needed

Nancy talked to Cindy today and wanted to give us an update on their conversation. Charles will have surgery next Friday at 7:30 am. He will be in the Baptist Hospital. Cindy would appreciate so very much if everyone keeps Charles in your prayers. Nancy will be sending updates when she hears from Cindy after the surgery and I will post here.

Prayers are needed for the speedy recovery of Andrea Kelly Hughes who recently had major surgery.

Also, continued to pray for Ina Lott Whittington's daughter, Rhonda, who has lost site in one eye and pray that her site will come back in the other eye soon so she can return to work at AT&T.

From Your National President….Georgia Turnage September 2011

Is it really fall or am I just imagining it? The cooler temperatures are

divine and I think a few leaves are falling in my yard. Anyway, it’s time

to kick off a brand new PAK year. I know all the chapters are buzzing

with new ideas to make this a successful PAK year.

Please consider rushing some new prospective members so that we can grow. I have copies of the pledging booklets if any of you 1st Vice Presidents need them. Give me a call if you need some.

I’d like to thank Josephine Peterson and all the ladies who helped prepare our successful convention last June. Thanks, ladies—it was outstanding! I also wish to thank Jane Brock for her work in putting together the Convention Minutes and the National Roster. Also, we are so grateful to have Pam Gee editing and publishing our Keynote this year. You do a wonderful job.

Remember that we are all sisters united, and may feel free to call on me for help at any time. I will be calling on you next year as we get closer to convention time. Ladies, “It’s to the stars through effort.” Let our programs reflect truth and beauty this year using art, music, and literature.

News from the Chapters……

Denver Delta

No meetings were held this summer by Denver Deltas. Their first meeting will be October 18 at Betty Shea’s home.

President Elly Danko returned from Germany September 28 after visiting friends and relatives and preparing her house for renting to folks who need a place to stay for a short while. Elly would like to sell, but her children want her to keep it for a vacation home after they retire in a few years.

Betty Shea’s husband is still in the hospital. She has relatives staying with her until Dwight is released. She had a nice summer, just gardening and taking care of her home. Genny McCloskey, a former member of Delta, sees Betty every week and takes her out to lunch or dinner.

Walburga Salazar kept busy this summer. She works hard taking care of the tenants in her apartment building. She assists them by driving them to doctors’ appointments and helping some with their housework.

Isolde Meyer had health problems and is back on oxygen during the night. One trip was allowed by the doctor to Estes Park for a Meyer family reunion. Both daughters were able to attend. There were 60 relatives to see and unite with.

Vicksburg Alpha Beta

From Frances Koury: How I welcome the feel of fall in the air! I know that we all agree it has been a long hot summer., but I have been excited nevertheless as my grandson Aaron and his wife, Elizabeth, were expecting our great grandson Stephen Glenn Koury in the fall.........WELL he arrived the 22nd of September 8 pounds 5 ounces 20 inches, of course, a beautiful baby! Mother, Dad and family are doing fine. What a miracle and blessing! Take advantage of the last concert of the season and plan to attend the free Candlelight program presented by the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra October 23 at The Church of the Holy Trinity...7:30...the church will be illuminated by over 200 candles. This is an awesome experience! However, we have the opportunity to host the Carlow Choir, director Giovanni de Chiaro on November 6 at 5p.m. In the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church this is also a free concert. They have toured Europe, played for the Pope, and in Lincoln Center,etc. Need your support!

Margharita Davis enjoyed meeting her sister Tomi Christman and niece Erin Chistman in New Orleans for Preservation Resource Center’s Shotgun Tour in and around the historic Magazine Street and Garden District area. Later in June she traveled to Virginia with son Key Davis and granddaughter Megan to meet son Lee Davis and Rachel Michlithwait for the wedding of former Vicksburg family friend Chris Thames at Jasmine Plantation located just outside of Richmond. Bill and Margharita celebrated Water Valley ‘s 80^th Watermelon Carnival with daughter Margaret Smith, her husband Billy and sons Trey, Aubrey, Hunter and their friends. Also, Key and Megan, her friends and the Davis cousins joined in the boating, kayaking, festivities and fireworks. Bill’s three sisters made it down from TN, IN and VA to their hometown, too. Everyone either stayed at the cabins at Cossar State Park on Enid Lake or back in town at the family homestead. It was a great reunion for all.

Tracy Trichell’s daughter, Alexandra has started college at Hinds Community College in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Alexandra decided to stay close to home so that she can help her Grandmother, Linda Christian while she is on the road to recovery. Tracy's twins, Thomas and James have started playing Football for the 5th and 6th grade teams at St. Francis. Thomas intercepted the ball and made his first touchdown. So, far the 5th grade team is undefeated. Both, Thomas and James continue to play baseball for the Vicksburg "Billies". Tracy Trichell is also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Ashmead Chapter. They hosted a Bell Ringing Ceremony for Constitution Week (September 17-23) at the Old Courthouse Museum on Saturday, September 17, 2011. Tracy was involved with the organization of the event which involved Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Children of the American Revolution, Sons of the American Revolution and Senator Briggs Hopson, III. A proclamation was signed by Mayor Paul Winfield. The event went very well and photos of the event were in the Vicksburg Post on Sunday, September 18.

Linda Christian is still recovering from her stroke caused by a brain tumor. She is making progress and doing well. She plans to start physical therapy at Premier on September 28. Linda would like to thank everyone for their "Get Well Wishes" and "Prayers".

From Marie Hernandez: Greetings from Brookdale Place in Birmingham, Alabama to all my PAK Sisters. My recent move from Vicksburg has been a trying experience but a necessary one. Advanced age and health problems made it necessary The plus part has been seeing my son Bob and his wife Joy along with my granddaughter Susan and my two great grans. It was such a pleasure to have Joan and Harold Morgan visit me the first week. I was so excited to see them. A week later Elaine Moore came or a visit. So with such caring friends to take time to come to see me I felt truly blessed. Another plus factor to this message is the fact that my house had a buyer about two weeks after it was on the market.With the economy such as it is I was pleasantly surprised. I like to think the new folks recognized a bargain when they saw it. I have met many nice new folks and will try to ignore the few grumpy oldsters. I have not had an opportunity to play bridge but hope to get myself organized enough to join a group. There have been several elegant parties. A Champagne Brunch and other excuses for a party like the starting of football season. There is a trio of older musicians that play for these events and they really "get with it." I love their music. The dining experience is exceptional ..white tablecloths, fresh flowers, waiters in black pants, white shirts, black bow ties, a professional chef walking around with his signature hat. The food is cooked "healthy" meaning no salt! I have threatened to cook a big pot of beans with a hunk of salt pork and plenty of seasoning. They would probably throw me out. Take care. Pam Gee spent the summer on the road with trips to Florida (theme parks with her son Chris and Virginia grandchildren Michael & Addison, plus visits with sister-in-law Nancy Gee Bugman and longtime friend Meredith Mahalak), Iowa, Atlanta, and Virginia.

Vicksburg Delta

Joan Morgan and hubby Hal attended the Rotary International Convention in New Orleans in May. My niece, who is president of her local chapter in Richmond, VA, and her husband were also there. Together we had a lovely visit and enjoyed delicious meals at our favorite restaurant and on the New Orleans river cruise. The highlight of the meeting was the main speaker Bill Gates. With his generous donation and those of Rotarians around the world, polio has almost been eradicated worldwide. What a wonderful legacy! On a hot, muggy, sunny weekend in May we attended our grandson's soccer tournament in Meridian. Again this summer, our grandchildren spent two weeks with us, which is always such a special time. We spent a week in Huntsville while our daughter recovered from surgery for a "bad" spider bite. Several weeks later we attended the reunion of Army officers who served in Aschaffenburg, Germany, in the 1960's. Having never visited Chicago, I was impressed with all the lovely architecture, flowers everywhere, parks along the river and lake, easy transportation system, and friendly people. All this, plus reconnection with friends made it a wonderful week. I am presently recovering from a total knee replacement and looking forward to doing all those things which have been too painful to do. It was wonderful to see all our chapter members at our September meeting at our home and to catch up on news. Everyone seemed excited to get involved with our philanthropic projects.

Joann White visited for two week with her sister, Tannie Bryan who lives in Holly Springs. They journeyed to Collierville, TN and Water Valley to see other family members. One hundred people attended the 3-day White Family Reunion which was held in Toccopola MS. Everyone had a good time socializing. Joann hosted a family engagement party for her son Barry and his bride-to-be, Cheri Bankston. Their wedding is November 18th and they will live in Madison MS. Grandson Paul received a computer engineering scholarship and is in his second year at Jones Community College.

Josephine Peterson has been traveling this summer. In June she visited her son, John in Arizona. They went on a sightseeing trip to Montana. They toured Glacier National Park and its sister Canadian park, Waterton Lakes Park. They saw glaciers as well as interesting wildlife... grizzly bears, black bears, elk, and deer. They then traveled south to Wyoming to see Yellowstone National Park. They saw "Old Faithful" as well as breathtaking scenery and wildlife. In July, Josephine again entertained her two older granddaughters from South Carolina. After a week of seeing the sights, she left for South Carolina to spend a week at a condo with Richard's family in the beautiful foothills. She enjoyed the mountain air and relaxing at the pool with all 4 grandchildren. As promised, in September her son, John took her on a birthday trip to the Northwest and Canada. The adventure began with a tour of Vancouver and Victoria. On the way to Victoria they walked the beautiful Butchart Gardens. While in Victoria they saw all the famous sights including the Empress Hotel, the Parliament Building with its beautiful stain glass windows, Thunderbird Park with its famous Totem Poles, and the Inner Harbor. Returning to Vancouver, they walked the Capilano Suspension Bridge and enjoyed the breathtaking view of the city from the Gondola at Grouse Mountain. Returning to the US at the border crossing at Blaine, Washington they ventured on to Seattle. While touring there, they enjoyed the spectacular view of the city from the Space Needle. They walked the Pike Place Market and saw the original Starbucks store. Dinner at Ivar's, a famous restaurant on the waterfront, was the highlight of the day. The next morning it was off to Mt. Rainier National Park and Portland. While in Oregon they drove the beautiful rugged coast and dipped their toes in the chilly Pacific Ocean. Before they departed Oregon, they saw the Columbia River Gorge with its beautiful waterfalls, Mt. Hood National Park and St. St. Helen's. It was the trip of a lifetime and the best birthday celebration possible! Now it's off the South Carolina to babysit the 4 grandchildren for Jodi and Richard. They will be enjoying a getaway to Cozumel, Mexico.

Member-at-large Peggy Ward's daughter Nancy and son-in-law Claude gave her a shih-tzu lap dog. Due to a knee injury that prohibits her from stooping, she has hopes that they will bring the dog for visits and then permanently when they have her house trained!

Vicksburg Omega

At our first meeting, September 7, 2011, we had our Installations of Officers. They are as follows: Janey Seabergh, President; Olivia Lee, First-Vice President; Cathey Lee, Second, Vice President; Alice Hebler, Treasurer and Laura McCallum, Secretary.

Bobby and Myrtle Curro-Alvarado kept the roads hot from May to July with big events in their families’ lives. Bobby had one grandchild graduate from college in Hattiesburg, one from high school in San Diego, and one married in Honolulu. AND, Myrtle’s older brother, John, celebrated his 80^th birthday in June in Nashville. As a result of all these milestones, they had some wonderful and exciting trips to enjoy being with family.

Marian Love Phillips youngest granddaughter, Emma Claire Nicholas, four years old, was baptized on September 17, in Fredericksburg, VA, at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church. Her youngest daughter, Marian Suzanne’s Godfather, (Deacon) Ricky Suprean of Lacombe, LA, conducted the ceremony.

June Emerson celebrated her 55th Class Reunion on Memorial Day weekend in Carthage, MS. June graduated from Carthage High School in 1956 with 37 in her class with 20 showing up for the reunion. Seven classmates have died and the rest were too sick to come. They all toured their old school building which is now being renovated and had a wonderful time at the banquet reminiscing of old school days.

Ina Lott Whittington and daughter, Rhonda and granddaughter, Katherine moved into their new home in Oak Park Subdivision in June. Their new address is 527 Oakwood Drive. Ina’s daughter, Rhonda, contacted an eye disease recently which left her blind in her right eye and Dr. James Fly of Jackson, MS, is trying to save her left eye so she can return to work. Please keep Rhonda and her family in your prayers that she will soon get her site back so she can see again and get back to her job at AT&T.

Omega Chapter member, Anita Hossley visited her daughter, Marcia Shingleton, over the Labor Day weekend. Marcia and her family have recently moved to Evans, Georgia. Anita went with her son, Matt and family. Her daughter-in-law, Katie, is also a member of Omega Chapter. They all enjoyed

getting together with the Shingleton family even for a short visit. The best part for Anita was getting to see her grandchildren: Rob, Meg, and Mary Elizabeth.

On September 24, Anita renewed her covenant with Mercy Associates. The ceremony was at St. Richard Catholic Church. Several members of the Vicksburg Chapter traveled to Jackson for the ceremony which was followed by a lovely luncheon. Mercy Associates is a community of lay men and women who foster the ideals of the Sisters of Mercy and who support their mission. The group meets on the first Sunday of the month at the Convent on East Avenue. Ashleigh Piazza, Anita's granddaughter, is a senior at St. Aloysius. Among her activities is her volunteer work with the Community Outreach soup kitchen each month at St. Michael. She is also a member of St. Michael's Total Youth. At St. Aloysius, Ashleigh is head cheerleader and a member of the Homecoming Honor Court.

Alice Hebler recently took a much needed 6-day vacation trip to Gulf Shores, AL, with her sisters and friends. A great time was had by all.

Louise Herrod and her husband, Bobby, are taking a cruise on the Carnival Cruise Line for 5-days, leaving the Port of New Orleans on October 31. They will be accompanied by in-laws to ports of call of Progreso, Yucatan, Mexico and Cozumel, Mexico.

Pam Melsheimer attended her grandson’s birthday parties in Brandon, MS. Jakob was 2 years old in June and Sean was 4 years old in August.

Katherine Turcotte, husband, Roy, and daughter-in-law, Lisa, just returned home from Buffalo, New York, where they attended Roy’s 20^th Naval Reunion, September 19-23. They all had a great time and really enjoyed themselves.

Joan Donovan and husband, Mike, left out on September 22, 2011, for Tulsa, Oklahoma, for a model airplane contest. Mike came in 2^nd place in one of the events. Congrats Mike!

Jane Loboda’s, father-in-law, Steve Laboda, passed away on Monday, September 26, 2011, at the age of 96 in West Virginia. He and his wife of 91 were married for 74 years and had celebrated their wedding anniversary this past May. She took care of him while he was sick so he would not have to go into a nursing home. We extend our deepest sympathy for your loss. Jane Is also expecting her fourth great grandchild, a boy, and he is due on November 5. She already has three great granddaughters. Congratulations Jane!

Sorority October Meeting Held

Our Omega Chapter sorority meeting was held last night at the home of Myrtle Curro Alvarado's lovely home at 2925 Cherry Street. Co-hostesses were Catherine Turcotte and Shannon Curro. The philanthropic was for the Vicksburg Family Development Center and Halloween party wares. The scheduled for the coming year, a new membership roster and the keynotes were given out. Discussion was made of our Christmas party and a committee was form to take care of getting the arrangements made. Our guest speaker talked about her son's illness and his stay of a year at the Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital in Jackson, MS. A donation of $100.00 was given to her towards cancer patients at the hospital. A meal of black beam soup with crackers and a salad was served. We also had some delicious strawberry cake cookies for dessert. Secret sister's gifts were handed out and everyone enjoyed an evening of being together in fellowship.

We had our first meeting last night with induction of our new officers at the lovely home of Janey Seabergh, President, Omega Chapter, at Grinders Place. We looked over the minutes of the convention, put together our meeting schedule for 2011-12 and received our 2011~2013 Pi Alpha Kappa Sorority National Roster booklet. Also, our members list was pass around to look over and make necessary corrections and/or additions. After the meeting we enjoyed a delicious meal with dessert. Soft drinks were served and was enjoyed by all. Not attending was, Joan Donovan, Olivia Lee, Shannon Curro, Vera Brown , Pat Tinney and Frances Miller.

Dear Sisters,

Spring is finally here with all the azaleas beginning to bloom. I hope everyone is planning to attend our convention on June 4 at Mansell Hall in First Presbyterian Church. The convention committee is hard at work on plans to make this year's convention productive and fun. We need each of you there, so please make your reservations NOW! (The form is included in the Keynote).

The scholarship applications have been delivered to the four schools and the Scholarship Committee will be meeting later in April to choose our recipient.

I hope each of you will have a joyous Easter celebrating the resurrection of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Thanks to Frances Koury for once again spearheading "To Vicksburg With Love," The concert by Michael Gibson and Betty Jean Patterson was a huge hit. We began to get a little nervous when the stars did not arrive on time, but Michael had undergone and emergency major dental procedure before making the trip to Vicksburg and still performed beautifully. Frances ended the show with a special presentation to Father Michael Nations prior to his departure from Church of the Holy Trinity, Vicksburg. Thanks to all those sisters who helped and attended!

Please make sure they notify me when sisters and PAK rats pass away. I have a few that I have noticed, but I want to make sure I have everyone so far. DENVER DELTA CHAPTER

President Elly Dando experienced several health problems earlier in 2010 but her health seems to be back on track and she had a great fall and winter. Her children surprised her with tickets to a play and concert in December. She hopes to stay well so she can visit her German homeland once again this year.

Betty Shay is still worried about her son's condition after the horrible accident which caused him to lose one of his eyes. He is still in the hospital under doctor's care and our thoughts and prayers are with him at this difficult time. Betty continues to work with her church on several projects: garage sale, bake sale, and making blankets for the poor. Betty still finds time once a week to visit Gennie McCloskey, one of our former members.

Walburga Salazar still feeds and cooks for the ill in her apartment house and is always on call to hlep when needed. Her cat "Frisky" had to be put down as he became aggressive toward people and begin making messes in the house. No more cats for Walburga - that was number three!

Isolde Meyer recovered from her back injury and promised her daughter Melissa no more snow shoveling, sweeping, raking, or stretching to reach things. She was fitted with a brace to help strengthen her back. In December, Isolde and daughter Heidi attended the madrigal; this is a yearly tradition to start the holidy season.

VICKSBURG ALPHA BETA CHAPTER

The combined Alpha Beta Chapter has continued to enjoy their expanded fellowship. Members have enjoyed learning decorating tips by chapter member Toni Stanchfield which she presented at the past two monthly meetings.

Kathryn Chaney enjoyed a lovely family wedding when granddaughter Ashley married Sam Berryhill in a lovely outdoor ceremony at the home of her parents, Kay and David Chaney. Sam is a lieutenant in the Air Force who will be stationed at Columbus Air Force Base for flight training. The couple will make their home on Columbus.

Pam Gee has been traveling - again! She has visited son Scott and his family in Atlanta and made a couple of trips to Iowa to visit her brother who is under hospice care.

"It was great having Kathy, granddaughter Dayna and friend James Fletcher "home for the holidays". Christmas that is!!!" writes Frances Koury. "Those that missed the "To Vicksburg, with Love" PAK program really missed a great program and fellowship. When you see the commercial for Hometown Medical (yes that's me in the seat lift chair) but the voice-over is that of granddaughter Dayna! Proud Grandmother! Time has flown and now it is Easter!"

VICKSBURG DELTA CHAPTER

For our February meeting we gathered at Harris Anthony's home and presented him with a Fringe Tree, in memory of our dear Sister, Merrilyn. We provided the sweets and soft drinks, while Harris had hot coffee to take the chill off a cool afternoon...a reminder of how much Merrilyn enjoyed a cup. We had mixed emotions a we shared wonderful memories of Merrilyn: times spent at their Lake Bruin Lake cottage and in their home...Founder's Day Tea and Chapter meetings there. We collected and delivered food to the Community Cupboard. Chapter members served a variety of delicious salads for the March Pot Luck luncheon at Joan Morgan's home. A list of potential candidates for National Offices was drawn up.

Joan Morgan enjoyed the company of her Grandchildren during their Spring Break. Although the weather didn't cooperate, she had a wonderful time with indoor activities. Late winter has proven hard on husband Hal, as he has been hospitalized with asthmatic bronchitis and again with pneumonia. Spring should bring brighter days!

Josephine Peterson took an early spring trip to see Richard's family in South Carolina. She babysat the four children for the weekend while Richard and Jill celebrated her birthday in a bed and breakfast inn near Asheville, NC. Josephine returned to MS for the christening of Will's baby on March 13 in Meridian. Nora is a precious baby who has her daddy's eyes and her paternal grandmother's dark hair and coloring. Josephine is now busy with the convention committee planning the convention in June.

VICKSBURG OMEGA CHAPTER

Myrtle Curro Alvarado recently went to the spa in Mexico along with her sister and niece from Alabama and niece Joanne (Beta). They've been going since 2006 and always enjoy their time together. The weather was perfect, accommodations very nice, and the food beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. All of this and with great hopes of coming home a little lighter. Myrtle and Bobby also had a short trip to New Orleans for a documentary on Mart Crowley's "Making the boys." While there they enjoyed a wonderful meal at Vicento Italian Restaurant.

Connie Greer fell in March and had a hairline fracture on her right hip. She is now home and healing nicely.

Laura McCallum's son Ryne is on the Honor Roll at school and has perfect attendance. He has done this for this entire elementary career thus far! Yeah Ryne!

Joan and Mike Donovan traveled to Tucson, AZ, March 12-21 to a model airplane contest (Vintage Stunt Championship). Mike flies in the competition. Contestants come from all over the world. This year there were some from Brazil. They also enjoyed visiting with friends they have made over the years that come from different states to the contest. The went to two parties and ate some good restaurants. This is an annual event and their seventh time to go. Tucson is a great place to visit. They have been on vacations there, and there are a lot of beautiful and interesting thing to see and do.

Vera and George Brown were honored with a joint birthday party by their children on March 12. The party was held at St. Michael Church Parish Hall. Vera notes, "The Birthday Party was a huge success and well attended. My children did a very good job and I was very proud of each of them. The food and decorations were wonderful and the pictures brought back many memories. My grandson, Patrick Francis, son of Andrea (Brown) and Owen Francis was made an Eagle Scout Saturday March 19th at a court of Honor and Reception at St. Paul's School Chapel in Covington, LA. We went to Covington for this. He also performed in Guys and Dolls in Covington. We attended this. He will graduate this year and will come to MS State in the fall, his daddy's Alma Mater. Nora Francis will be singing The National Anthem at the New Orleans Hornets' Basketball game on Friday April 1st. We wish we could have been there." Hunter Walker, Son of Julie and Bill Walker was named to the State Honors Choir. He is a Junior at Clinton High School.

Anita Hossley went to Orange Beach with her daughter and family during Spring Break. They stayed at the Caribe Resort and had a wonderful time enjoying the beach, delicious food, swimming, and relaxing.

Frances and Chuck Miller along with Frances' son Eric Holland enjoyed a short vacation in New Orleans. They particularly enjoyed going to Cafe Due Monde for coffee, shopping, and eating at the Court of Two Sisters.

Chris and Tom Patin's son, Benjamin, graduated from nursing school on December 8. After passing his state boards, Ben was employed by UMC.

Marian Phillips has been suffering the effects of a spider bite she received on February 19. After a lengthly hospital stay, Marian is recuperating and receiving therapy at Shady Lawn and has hopes of going home soon.

Our own Alice Hebler has been designated as the new Mayor of Washington Street. Before he died, Ellis Koury told his wife that "Alive is the only person who can take my place." This was one of the highlights of the two series articles Gordon Cotton wrote about Alice and her wonderful personality and contributions to our city. Alice brings her attitude of happiness to everyone she meets. Omega Chapter is glad she is one of us and our friend.

We held our Omega Chapter Sorority Valentine's meeting last night at the Vicksburg Senior Center downtown. Heart shaped sandwiches and dip/chips was placed on the main table. We had a few members that could not make the meeting because they were unfortunately sick. Wishing them a speedy recovery!

Dear Sisters,

I hope everyone had a happy holiday season. Hopefully the chilly temperatures will help us appreciate spring when it comes.

I look forward to seeing many of you at “To Vicksburg With Love” on February 8^th. I hope some of you will call me to join you for one of your meetings if I haven’t had the opportunity to be with you.

Plans are being made for our national convention this summer. Convention has been set for June 3-4. A reception will be held on Friday evening. Our meeting and luncheon will be at First Presbyterian Church on June 4. The convention committee will be meeting soon. Convention committee members are: Josephine Peterson, Georgia Turnage, Jane Brock, Helene Benson, Beth Haskins, Joan Morgan, Janie Curtis, Ginny Horvath, Pam Gee, Anita Hossley, and Janie Seabergh.

The Scholarship Committee will be meeting to prepare and deliver applications for our scholarship. The committee includes Josephine Peterson, Ginny Horvath, Alice Hebler, Pam Gee, and Beth Haskins.

Our sister Linda Christian has been moved to Methodist Rehab in Jackson. Tommy Trichell, husband of our sister Tracy and Linda’s son-in-law, underwent quadruple bypass surgery on January 24. Please keep this PAK family in your prayers.

Our deepest sympathies are extended to the family of Velda Buchanan, long-time Beta Chapter member, who passed away recently.

DENVER DELTA CHAPTER

Isolde Meyer reports, “2010 certainly has been a trying year for our aging chapter. Our best attempts to hold regular meetings were often thwarted due to illness or uncooperative weather. We are hoping for a better 2011.”

Elly Danko kept her doctors busy with a myriad of ailments. Elly’s year started with mysterious nosebleeds that occurred every day, causing much concern for her doctors. She then had leg pains which proved to be a blood clot, and then she was stricken with shingles – a very painful form of chicken pox. Despite all that, she still made plans to visit her homeland with grandson Daniel and his new wife. They enjoyed visits with Elly’s relatives and school friends, strolls through the Bavarian woods, and a river tour on the Danube to Vienna. Elly also spent considerable time this summer in her bountiful vegetable garden. She also helped her local German Club with its annual Christkindl Markt.

Betty Shea and her husband, Dwight, traveled to see their son and grandsons families in Chicago, and her sister, Luise, who once also was a member of this chapter and still lives in Grand Junction. Betty’s son, Barry, recently had a terrible motorcycle accident. After making some repairs, he took it for a short test drive, hit a patch of gravel, lost control, and tumbled, bike and all, down a small hill. Betty’s daughter, Penny, is helping out his family by running errands. We are all praying for a speedy recovery.

Walburga Salazar has kept busy this year helping others – as usual. She spent a tough five weeks housesitting for a friend in Evergreen. It was tough because Wallburga never figured out how to turn on the furnace, nor how to work the new stove. Right after she returned home, she received some scary news from her son, Richard. A routine doctor visit revealed that he was severely anemic and needed an immediate transfusion of two pints of blood. Wallburga has decided that next year she is going to slow down a bit and take care of herself. She hopes to save enough money for a trip to Germany.

Isolde Meyer spent three wonderful weeks in Germany with her daughter, Melissa, in March. They visited friends and family, and even went sightseeing to Rothenburg on the way to an old school friend’s home. They spent most of their time with Isolde’s sister, Doris, who spoiled them with delicious German dishes. Back home, Isolde tried to shovel snow off her sidewalk and severely injured her back, sending her to the hospital and then to live with Melissa for eight weeks. After her recovery, her daughters, Melissa and Heidi and their families spent a week on Lake Powell on Heidi’s houseboat. Later in the summer, Melissa and her husband, Ron, purchased land in Creede and spent many weekends enjoying the quiet in their 5^th wheel.

VICKSBURG ALPHA BETA CHAPTER

This fall Alpha and Beta Chapters joined forces to reenergize their chapters. Members have enjoyed several joint meetings including a wonderful Christmas party at Roca in December. Members presented gifts to their secret sisters and the group played a lively round of “Dirty Santa.”

Kathryn Chaney says, “I think most know that husband, Mark, had colon cancer and had surgery in late August. The prognosis is good, but as a precautionary measure he is going through radiation treatments...almost finished! We have felt the prayers and appreciate all of them! Then, on a happier note, our son, Carl, has been in the news lately....He is President and CEO of Hancock Bank (Gulfport) and they have just bought Whitney Bank out of New Orleans...a really big deal...made headlines of Clarion Ledger.”

Leigh Cook has been on several trips over the past few months. On Thanksgiving Day she attended the Saints/Cowboys game in Dallas. In December, she went to the Hard Rock Biloxi and saw Brandon Bennett , an Elvis impersonator, in concert. She also attended the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville Florida on New Year’s Day. Mississippi State beat Michigan 52 -14.

Bill and Janie Curtis had wall-to-wall company for Christmas. Sharon and Charles Winfield, daughter and son-in-law, from Franklin, TN; grandson Corey and Teva Winfield from Lakehills, TX, and their children Andrew, Anna, and Elijah; Ryan Winfield from Washington, D.C., and Blair Cook, granddaughter, from Highland, MD. They joined the three children who live in Vicksburg: Beth Maggio and David, Justin, and Amanda Maggio; Leigh Cook; and Mike, Denesha, and Cameron Curtis. “We had a great time being together and bonding with family,” added Janie.

Margharita Davis attended her 50^th Baton Rouge High School class reunion this year at historic Magnolia Mound Plantation pavilion. She first joined fellow classmate and her childhood friend Bette and husband Emile Vidrine in Lafayette. While there, she enjoyed watching Bette’s grandson Samuel pick fresh eggs which they later ate at breakfast along with their very own homegrown honey from their bee hives. Also fun was attending husband Bill’s 50^th class reunion in Water Valley that was held during the annual Watermelon Festival. Having the old family home for their children and grands able to join them made this a really special reunion.

Pam Gee spent a lot of time driving in the snow these past couple of months. In early December, she drove to Iowa to visit her brother and enjoyed daily snowfalls. On Christmas Day, she drove through the snow to Atlanta to spend a few days with her son Scott and his family. It was much more fun to watch the snow falling than to drive in it!

During Thanksgiving holidays Marie Hernandez was delighted to welcome son Bob Hernandez from Birmingham along with grandson Robert and his wife Carrie from McLean, Virginia. The star attraction was Marie's great granddaughter Helena Marie who will be celebrating her first birthday Feb. 16. Marie is looking forward to son Bob and his wife Joy to visiting in February to celebrate her birthday.

Three cheers for Mary Lewis’ daughter Cynthia who climbed to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro. What a feat! (Will Mary accompany her on her next climb?!!)

Sue Rowlett must feel like she just climbed a mountain after months of physical therapy following her October 18 knee replacement surgery. She did get out to play bridge for the first time in mid-January.

Lois Waldbauer’s Christmas was marked by daughter Wendy’s stay at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Suffering from heart issues, Wendy had a defibrillator put in. She is back in Starkville and already back running.

VICKSBURG DELTA CHAPTER

The October meeting was held in the home of Joan Morgan. Her husband, Hal, presented a program of their trip to Germany, with numerous photos of the gorgeous displays of flowers everywhere.

Mary Lee provided material for everyone to make a Christmas wreath for themselves and some to be presented to nursing homes. For our annual November philanthropic project, members brought wrapped gifts for the CAP center. It was voted that we would change our meeting time to afternoons. Mary served a delicious stroganoff meal with several desserts to choose from.

Our annual pot luck Christmas dinner was held at the beautifully decorated home of Josephine Peterson. Following the delicious meal, everyone played Dirty Santa. We met at Joann White’s home and she and her co-hostess, Beth Haskins, served a delicious quiche luncheon at the January meeting. Joann’s coconut cake (to die for) and Rosemary’s old fashion jelly cake (yummy!) rounded out the relaxed meal as everyone caught up on news. Rosemary Murphy, of “Parsley, Sage & Thyme by Rosemary” told us of the evolution of her company. She provided samples of her products and generously presented members with a jar of her jellies. Plans were made for the memorial for our dear member, Merrilyn Anthony, who died March 9, 2009.

In October, Joan Morgan traveled to Memphis with her daughter-in-law Jeanette and grandchildren to see Wicked. Her daughter, Michelle, from Huntsville and a friend, joined them for lunch and the performance. It was fun to share the day with all of them. Hal and Joan attended Veterans’ Day patriotic programs at their grandchildren’s respective school. Veterans and their “sponsors” were recognized individually, students presented a musical play, and the staff held a reception for the guests. Granddaughter Adia, join her grandparents for the Jackson Symphony concert Cirque de la Symphony, for an evening of music and gymnastic and agility performances on high wire ropes, balls, and humans. In December we spent two weeks in “frigid” Huntsville, AL, helping Michelle while she recovered from surgery, arriving back in Vicksburg just in time for Christmas. Our granddaughter, Adia, a student at Madison Crossing in Madison MS, won the Book Fair for the 4^th Grade and now heads to the District level.

Josephine Peterson had a busy holiday season. Thanksgiving found her counting her blessings. Richard’s family was here for a Thanksgiving feast and her family joined them. It was a celebration like those of Josephine’s childhood with good food, football, and a house full of relatives and happy children. Will and Karie’s baby, Nora Ann, arrived by C-section on December 2 weighing 7 lb., 9 oz. and 20 inches long. Josephine was there for the birth and it was special to see Will come out of delivery carrying Nora. She is precious. The Delta Chapter PAK Christmas party was at Josephine’s. Everyone enjoyed the delicious potluck dinner and the “Dirty Santa” gift exchange. Josephine’s son John arrived from Arizona on December 22. John was eager to meet his newest niece so they visited Will’s family on the way to South Carolina. John and Josephine enjoyed spending Christmas at Jodi and Richard’s with four grandchildren. She had a truly blessed Christmas!

Joann White reports that she enjoyed the Christmas season with family and friends, especially the Delta PAK Christmas dinner at Josephine Peterson’s and the Singing Christmas Tree at Trinity Baptist Church. She adds, “Then 2011 ushered in a flurry of events in my family…my sister Tannie had surgery, my brother-in-law had a heart attack, and my great-niece was born and spent two weeks in a Children’s Hospital in Louisville, KY. It was a welcome change of pace to host our Delta January meeting and I am looking forward to February events.”

News from Peggy Ward, our Member-At-Large, from Portland Tennessee:

“Life is good here in Tennessee. We had a white Christmas and a white January. Many snow days have provided opportunities to sit by the fire and quilt or read novels. I send a Tennessee country wish for a Happy New Year to all of my PAK sisters.” (This was e-mailed by Peggy’s granddaughter since the snow prevented her from getting to the mailbox!)

VICKSBURG OMEGA CHAPTER

Omega Christmas Party

Myrtle Curro Alvarado and her husband Bobby went to his 50^th college reunion at the CITADEL in Charleston, SC, in early November. The weather was perfectly beautiful although a little cold. On the return home they stopped for a visit with Myrtle’s brother, John Loviza, in Nashville, TN.

Alice Hebler recently returned from a Caribbean Cruise with two of her sisters, Maureen and Maggie. They went to ports of call of Costa Maya, Belize, Cozumel and Roatan. They all had a great and wonderful time.

Marian Love Phillips’ brother, Marion, Jr. passed away on October 31, 2010, from complications of diabetes at the age of 65. Marian and her husband, Bob, both harvested a deer (doe) the same day at the famous Christmas Place Plantation and Hunting Club near Eden, MS in November. Both deer were taken with a muzzleloader and weighed 120 lbs. apiece. Marian was invited by her youngest daughter, Marian “Suzi” Suzanne and her son-in-law, Dennis, to spend Christmas with them and her youngest granddaughter, 3-1/2 year old, Emma, in Fredericksburg, VA. This was Marian’s Christmas gift once again. Dennis works for the FAA in Washington, DC and Suzi is now a stay-at-home Mom and is also pursuing her Associates Degree at home online.

Pam Melsheimer made a late summer trip to Washington, D.C., with her children Ross and Tammy, grandsons, Sean (3) and Jackob (1) and Tammy’s Mom and Dad. A highlight was visiting the Spy Museum.

Roy and Katherine Turcotte celebrated their 50^th wedding Anniversary on New Year’s Eve. A Mass with renewal of vows and special blessing was held at St. Michael Catholic Church with Father P. J. Curly, officiating and a reception following the Mass. All four of their sons were able to attend - Jeff, from Albuquerque, NM, Greg from Seminary, MS; Tim, from Lexington, KY; and Steve, from Vicksburg. Sorority sisters helped with the reception. Thanks! Roy, had to have a tumor removed from his bladder, which was malignant, but had not invaded bladder lining or muscle. There was a scare that he had prostate cancer but biopsy report was cancer free. He has started precautionary treatment on his bladder. God is good, as well as the prognosis. We are all pulling for you Roy!

Ina Lott Whittington had a hip replacement on Monday, November 15, 2010, at River Region Hospital and has been at Heritage House Nursing Home recovering. She is looking forward to going home by the end of January and will be staying with her son until she fully recovers in Delta, Louisiana. Get well wishes Ina!

Mike and Joan Donovan traveled to White River Junction, Vermont, in October. They caught the changing colors at just the right time and was so beautiful. They also saw a lot of covered bridges and red barns. The scenery was awesome! The trip reminded them of the wonders of God’s creation displayed for their enjoyment.

Dear PAK Sisters:

Our Alpha Beta sister Linda Christian had surgery on January 11, 2011, for a brain tumor. She came through the surgery fine, but will have quite a recovery ahead of her. She’s at the Baptist Hospital in Jackson, MS. Please pray for Linda and her family that God will bring her healing and strength and comfort for her family.

UPDATE: Thank-you so much for your prayers. They had to take my mom back into surgery because she had developed a blood clot yesterday morning (Thursday, 1/13). She made it through that. Today, (Friday, 1-14 @ 8:48 a.m.) we are at the point before the blood clot develop. She is still on the ventilator, she is moving her right leg and arm. She is trying to open her eyes. The Dr. removed the drain from where he did the surgery and she did not like it one bit! (which is a good sign). My Dad Cell number is 601-415-1951 if you would like to call him but I will try to keep you posted. My cell number is 601-618-9613. I was with my Dad most of Monday through Thursday and spent Wednesday night with him in the ICU waiting room. I went to the visiting hour at 6:00 a.m. then came to work after. My brother Scott is going to spend the rest of the day with my Dad then I will go back over tonight. Since my surgery, I have no annual or sick leave left. I have already started taking some leave without pay. I will be over there this weekend and Monday (since it is a Government Holiday). Thank-you for keeping my mom in your prayers - God Bless you and the other PAK Sisters!

Todays's (1/16/2011) UPDATE:
I just talked with Joan Morgan and she said Linda is improving. They have taken out the tube in her throat, which is naturally sore. She’s not eating yet because of the soreness. Her left arm and leg have been affected and she has lost some peripheral vision in the left eye. The doctors said the tumor had been growing for 30 years and was huge. They were able to remove almost all of it. Linda should be in ICU another couple of days. Please keep Linda and her family in your prayers.

We enjoyed a wonderful Christmas Party at Jacques Cafe in the Park at Battlefield Inn tonight. We all had a delicious meal with our husbands and opened presents from our secret sisters for the past year. We also drew names for new ones for 2011. First Meeting Last Night

We had our first sorority meeting last night which was held at Katie Hossley's lovely home on Duval Street. It was a very good attendance and she and her co-hostesses prepared a meal of lasagna, salad, french bread and a crunchy pizza desert with whipped cream. It was so good to see and visit with everyone again since our last meeting in May.

Denver Delta Chapter
Isolde Meyer reports, "Time is flying and we have so much to do before winter arrives. No meeting will be held in September since two of our members are out of town."

President Elly Danko is in Germany visiting friends and relatives with her grandson Daniel and his new wife. They needed to see where Grandma spent her youth. While there, brother Karl_Heinz bought them a belated wedding gift of a trip via ship down the Danube.

Betty Shay again visited her son in Illinois where he is raising Alpacas. She also visited her grandson in the Chicago area and her four great-grandchildren.

Gennie McCloskey, a former member, had visitors from Nova Scotia and Korea where her granddaughter has a teaching job. Gennie and Betty are still good friends and are both active in church. They get together for lunch or dinner every weekend.

Walburga Salazar left for Evergreen, Colorado, to house-sit and take care of her friend's golden retriever while they traveled through October.

Isolde Meyer had a big birthday party for her 85th with 60+ guests at the park near her daughter Heidi' house July. In addition the July event was to also celebrate her grandson Cody's High School Graduation. Now both boys, Tyler and Cody, are starting college. Isoide took a 3-day try to Estes Park with friends just to relax and enjoy the scenery.

Vicksburg Alpha Chapter
We deeply mourm the loss of our beloved sister, Florence Amborn, who died on August 15, 2010, as a result of injuries suffered in an auto accident. Her 90 years were filled with family, friends, and fun. She was always the life of the party and our chapter and we will deeply miss her.

Most Alpha members confessed to having very quiet summers, spending most of the days inside trying to keep cool and avoid the intense and long-term high temperatures.

Pam Gee enjoyed a wonderful family get-together this summer with her brother and his children and grandchildren and all her children and grandchildren. Twenty-nine people (14 children ages 11 and under!) gathered in a large 8-bedroom cabin in Pigeon Forge and enjoyed losts of activities and family time for a few days. In September, she traveled to Prague, Vienna and Budapest. Not only was the weather great, bu the beautify of the cities was awe-inspiring. She especially enjoyed the moonlight cruise on the Danube in Budapest.

Frances Koury said it was fun to entertain her grandson Aaron Koury and his bride Elizabeth from Dallas, Texas over the Labor Day Weekend. Ever since the wedding last October they have been planning to bring her mother and father Bev and Bob James of Dallas to visit and tour Vicksburg. She acted as tour guide and enjoyed re-discovering the beauty of Vicksburg and why people from all over come to visit our city. The park was beautiful, the weather perfect, the foliage lush, the story awesome...truly they were on hallowed ground. They also visited the Court House, Catfish Row, the unique stories of our homes and churches, our place in history. The want to come back as they didn't get to "do" everything! Frances notes that, of course, they didn't miss a meal....Jacques, Anchuca, Main Street Market, and Rusty's with some Goldies' ribs added for appetizers and Connie's beautiful cabin on the lake with family made for a perfect weekend. She hopes you will meet them when they return. She added, "A fantastic Surprise Birthday celebration hosted by my children, planned with such detail by Connie was enjoyed by some 40 family and friends. The theme Special K was carried out and individual boxes of Special K were favors, Sally and Chris of Main Street Market served the wonderful food and I appreciate their serving on Saturday (May 22). Besides immediate family, it was extra special to have my granddaughter Allison and the fiance Damon (who are planning a June 4, 2011 wedding) my brother from Washington D.C. and my nephew and his wife from Texas. It was a surprise."

Mary Lewis and her family enjoyed visiting their daughter Cynthia at her lake home near Toronto, Canada, this summer. Cynthia is in training to climb Mt. Kilimarjaro in November. Mary's grandson graduated from the University of Texas in May.

Jean McKnight's grandson, Edward McKnight IV, was married in June to Maggie Griffing at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center. They will be living in Vicksburg where Edward farms with his father and Maggie is a nurse at Covenant Health & Rehab Center.

Lois Waldhbauer's son Walter and his wife, Jennifer, of Ohio will be visiting Lois in October.

Vicksburg Beta Chapter
The Beta Chapter first meeting and Initiation Ceremony for new members was held Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at the home of Georgia Turnage - the following new sorority sisters were inducted: Lee Cook, Beth Maggio, Amy Jackson, Toni Stanchfield, and Joanne Wright. MiHyang Faulks, a member for two years was inducted as well since the Beta Chapter was unable to hold a ceremony when she joined due to the time scheduling conflicts.

The Beta and Alpha Chapter will start meeting together and will be merging into one group.

Margharita Davis, her daughter Margaret Smith, grandson Hunter and 2 other l35 year old friends from Brandon vacationed over the 4th of July week at Ober Gatinburg; tubed down the Dan River, Dansbury, NC, amongst thirty foot rock cliffs in unbelievable clear water (with some rapids whereupon the grandmother needed a little help portaging). Then on to Greensboro, NC for a day at Wet & Wild (major water slides). In September, Margharita celebrated with son Lee on his 35th birthday in Austin, TX checking out possible sailboat purchase to enjoying Austin's city front with Lee and girlfriend Rachel Micklethwait from the paddle boat "Long Star" on Lady Bird River. Watched & videoed St. Al parade where granddaughter Megan Key Davis, daughter of son Key, marched with the St. Al Color Guard. Bill and I are enjoying all the fall vegetables from our gardens.

Vicksburg Delta Chapter
Jane Brock's son, Chris Brock, got married this weekend, September 25th, to Amanda Nevels at Crawford Street United Methodist Church. There reception was in Floral Hall at the church. Chris received a bachelor's degree in construction and land management from Mississippi State University in 2007 and is project and safety manager for Fordice Construction. Amanda received an associate degree in business management from Hinds Community College and is store manager at Perfumaria in the Vicksburg Outlet Mall. They will be making their home in Vicksburg.

After a Western Caribbean cruise this past spring, Beth Haskins spent the summer traveling in MS between Oxford and the Coast. Daughter, Mary Amanda is attending Ole Miss working on her Ph.D. in health promotion and son Josh is an MSU Bulldog majoring in journalism. He has had several articles published in The Reflector, the student newspaper of Mississippi State. Beth is very proud of both of her children. Husband Phillip retired from the Corps of Engineers in December, 2009, after 49 years of service, but was rehired in January. (Two kids still in school) Beth has returned to teaching 3-year-olds after taking a year break and has gotten back into the routine and is enjoying her class.

Mary Lee spent a great deal of time visiting their son and daughter in law in Colorado in May, June, July and September. It is always wonderful to be with family! The other reason so much time in Colorado is they purchased 5 acres of beautiful mountain land just west of Denver where they will build their retirement home in a few years. They are thrilled and excited. Their Bed and Breakfast has kept her hopping this summer and they feel blessed to have hosted so many fascinating people from all over the world, but have to say, their favorite guests are good old Mississippians! She has also started selling Premier Designs jewelry part time. She has a really had a great time doing home shows and meeting wonderful women who love jewelry. So look out PAK sisters, she will be calling you!!!

This summer has been busy with travel and grandchildren for Josephine Peterson. In May she visited with son Richard's family in South Carolina. Anders, her 4 1/2 year old grandson, accompanied her home for a visit. He loves Mississippi and enjoyed his time here. In late May, son John ha a business trip to Dallas. He surprised her with a quick visit on Memorial Day weekend. In July, Josephine's granddaughters came from South Carolina. This was their first trip to Mississippi, so they enjoyed touring the park, seeing a magic show, and having a delightful evening cruise on the Sweet Olive. They loved being with their MS relatives, too. Josephine and the girls returned to South Carolina to celebrate their baby sister Aspen's second birthday. In August, Josephine visited a friend in Atlanta. They enjoyed sightseeing, having dinner on the lake at Stone Mountain, and seeing an amazing laser show. In late August, she attended her class reunion. She saw many of her high school friends she hadn't seen in 20 years. She said, "It was a fun weekend reminiscing about our days at Yazoo City High." She concludes, "The big news in our family is that Will and Karie are having a baby girl. We're all excited! I'm looking forward to cooler weather, club activities, and some college football games."

Sally Riddle said she chose to stay in Vicksburg this summer instead of traveling and, as a result, got to do some special things here at home. She said it was fun getting the Delta Chapter members together for coffee when our members-at-large, Peggy Ward, visited in July. She said, " We don't usually get to see everyone in the summer." She also enjoyed helping her granddaughter, Jo Lynn, get settled in her new apartment with her sweet baby girl, Mary Ester. Mary is saying a few words, waling everywhere, and eating table food. She'll celebrate her first birthday in October. Sally closes, "I'm looking forward to traveling, now that the weather is cooler, and will visit my brother in Naples, Florida. The many local fall activities will keep me busy between now and Christmas."

Joann White shares that her foster daughter Brea Hugley married Mark Mendoza. She says, "The wedding was lovely - I enjoyed decorating and preparing with my sisters. My sorority sisters helped us celebrate." On August 5-7, she attended Water Valley's 41st Annual Watermelon Carnival. The carnival featured her sister-in-law's "Denise Brown Pottery" and her niece and her husband's band, "Busted Screen Door." All her siblings were there. Joann's grandson, Paul White, is attended Jones Community College on a choral scholarship and is studying computer engineering.

News from Peggy Ward, our Members-At-Large, from Portland Tennessee:
"Life in the country north of Nashville gets busy this time of the year with harvest activities. A good time to get away - so a trip to Vicksburg worked beautifully into my plans. The trip to Vicksburg was busy. I brought friends from Olney, IL. (home of the white squirrels) to stay with me at the White house. The hostess, Joann White (Delta), provided great food, wonderful side trips to Natchez, Monroe, and, of course, historic Vicksburg. Did I mention Joann cooks great desserts?" Peggy says she really misses her PAK sisters.

Vicksburg Omega Chapter
Andrea Francis, daugher of Vera Marshall Brown, is recovering from a hysterectomy in Mandeville, LA. We wish her a speedy recovery.

Joan Donovan and husband, Mike, traveled to Carmichaels, PA, in June to a model airplane contest. This is an annual event and this was thier 7th trip there. Eveyone had a great time and it was fun fisiting with friends they had made. The ladies went on a shopping spree one day to Ligonier, PA. It was fun going to the different little shops. The guys had a ball flying their planes. Joan even flew a plane. On september 22, Joan and her husband left for Tulsa, OK, for a contest and will be leaving out again on October 1st for two weeks to Vermont and return on October 12, 2010.

Marian Love Phillips's husband, Bob, has been hospitalized several times in the last few months but is doing much better now. They took a trip to Water Valley, MS, to the Watermelon Carnival for the frist weekend in August. While there they had a booth at the carnival selling her husband's copper trees and Hershel Howells' two books that he wrote, Lim and Jeff's God. It wa a fun time visitng with the Howells and their friends. Marian' step-daughter, Jessica Kathryn Huckabee of Santa Fe, NM and Braddock Preston got married in Sparks, NV, on September 18, 2010. She and her husband were not able to attend the wedding. Her brother, Marion (Buster) Love, Jr., had to have both of his limbs amputated because of diabetes on September 27, 2010. Please pray for his recovery.

Ina Lott Whittington's husband, Wlliam Floyd, died on Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at the G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery Veterans Administration Medical Center in Jackson. He was 73. Vera Marshall Brown's daughter Julie Walker, has been battling cancer. Please continue to keep her in your prayers also.

Anita Zorn Hossley and Chris Patin attended Glynnis LaGarde's wedding in Washington, DC on August 7, 2010. They flew up on August 6 and flew home on August 8. It was a whirlwind trip. Anita also spend Labor Day with her daugher and family in Baton Rouge, LA. Janey Seabergh, Chris and Anita are involved in the 150 celebration of Catholic education in Vicksburg. She and Janey were involved in the luncheon on September 24 after the Mercy Day Mass at St. Aloysius.

Our Omega Chapter has a new slate of officers and they are: President, Anita Hossley, 1st Vicksburg President, Vera Brown, 2nd Vice President, Janey Seabergh, Secretary, Laura McCallum and Secretary, Alice Hebler.

Circle the date of Sunday, November 14, for the Candlelight Series with the Mississippi Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Espicopal Church. This free concert has proven to be one of the most anticipated events of The Four Season of the Arts program. Please suppor this.

William Floyd Whittington

William Floyd Whittington died Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at the G. V. "Sonny" Montgomery Veterans Administration Medical Center in Jackson. He was 73.

Born in Crystal Springs, he was the son of the late Grant W. Whittington and Alma Leigh Taylor Whittington. He had been a resident of Vicksburg since 1964. Mr. Whittington served in the Army and the National Guard and was a graduate of the Officers' Training School in Fort Benning, GA.

Mr. Whittington owned and operated the Green Thumb Nursery for a number of years and was the owner and manager of the "The Hut" Restaurant prior to his retirement in 2005. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 3, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Knights of Columbus Council 898, where he was a past grand knight and a member of the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree. Mr. Whittington was a former member of the Elks Lodge and the Moose Lodge. He was a communicant of St. Paul Catholic Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Bobbeye Sue Whittington and Betty Lou Whittington.

He is survived by his wife, Ina Carl Lott Whittington of Vicksburg, a daughter, Rhonda Whittington of Vicksburg; a son, David Grant Whittington, (Mary "Charlie") of Vicksburg; three grandchildren, Jesica Wright, Shelby Wright and Katherine Tipton; two sisters, Carolyn Vinzant of Crystal Springs and Aletha Gibson (Joe) of Brookhaven; two brothers, Alton Whittington (Aline) of Crystal Springs and Jerry Whittington (Phillis) of Baton Rouge; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Riles Funeral Home with Monsignor Patrick Farrell, pastor of St. Paul Catholic Church, officiating. Visitation will be Saturday at the funeral home from 10:000 until the service.

Memorials may be made to the Knights of Columbus Priests' Education Fund, P. O. Box 1003, Vicksburg, MS 39181.

Pool Party On May 8, 2010

Our pool party was held at Alice Hebler's lovely home on Tower Road. I brought my camera to take pictures but never got around to it. There was a very good crowd and everyone enjoyed themselves...a lot to eat and a lot to drink. A good time was had by all and we will return to our regular meetings in September. Dear Sisters,

First of all, let me say that the March 13 Founder's Day was delightful. Alpha Chapter did an excellent job with the most scrumptious food and darling decorations. I'm so sorry more of our sisters were not able to attend. You really missed a time of wonderful fellowship. The Allred's loft is beautiful and they were such gracious hosts.

I hope I will be able to attend some of the chapter meetings this spring. I hope each of you will enjoy the spring and summer!

Vicksburg Alpha Chapter

Florence Amborn is looking forward to two weddings in her family. Her granddaughter Abigail Amborn will be married on May 9 and grandson Andy Amborn will be married in June. Both weddings will take place in Vicksburg. Her niece Johnie marie Downing and husband Larry will visit from Tallahassee in early April.

Dot Bridgers has moved to Heritage house. Her new address is 3101 Wiscounsin Avenue, Apt. 107.

Her son's emergency surgery in late January sent Pam Gee to Abingdon, VA, (driving through the snow!) for a little caregiving. Although she spent most of the time there in a hospital room or apartment, the town was beautiful and she looks forward to another visit there (under better circumstances.)

Frances Koury reports that Four Seasons of the Arts is celebrating the 10th year of the Vicksburg Chamber Music Festival. "It has been my pleasure to help coordinate this along with Dorothy Brasfield and dedicated volunteers. We need heightened support of the community in order to contue to bring this exceptional schedule of outstanding artists to our city. The vicksburg chamber Music presnets a Symphonic Spring April 28, Minju Choi, Korean Pianist; April 25 cello trio; May 2nd MSO Brass Quintet will be playing on the lawn of Carl and Lamar McMillin's Fort ill home. meet and greet the artists at a reception following each program. Alpha Chapter is looking forward to our April 13 meetiing. Megan Cook will present her porgram on angels, pictures and the Hope Award. In May we will have a visual presentation of the Evita Peroni Designs by Kate Knudsen (Kathy Koury) along with samples for viewing. We would love to have guests (if you want to come just let me know.) The 41 Army Band will be performing for our Fourth of July on Saturday July 3 at 5 ;m. at the First Baptist Church. Nothing to do in Vicksburg?? Come on--be a part of it."

Mary Lewis and husband Jack enjoyed a visit from their daughter and her family from Dallas. She recently got a good report from her specialist. They enjoyed a special treat with dinner at the Bonefish Grill in Madison.

More weddings are ahead for Jean McKnight when one of her grandsons will be getting married here in Vicksburg.

Lucy Sessums is still recuperating from a fall a few weeks ago, but is feeling better.

Bernett Tucker and husband Guy have both suffered from medical problems recently, gut they did get good reports from the doctor on their last visits. Bernett says it has been quite difficult with both of them down.

It's great having your children visit - especially if they do little odds and ends around the house. Lois Waldbauer was very glad to have her helpful son from Ohio visit and take care of several thing which needed to be tended to.

It's been quiet few months for Illma Williams, but she is looking forward to her yo9ungest granson's graduation from Mississippi State University in May with a degreein banking and finance.

Vickburg Beta Chapter

It is with sincere sadness we acknowledge the loss of our PAK Sister Geroge Edna Sherman. She was a faithful and devoted member. We will miss her presnece.

Mark and Kathryn Chaney welcomed their first Great Grandchild into the family...Nicholas Ryan Lee (son of Lacey Chaney lee and Ryan Lee, Grandson of Martin and Teresa Chaney). Nicholas was born October 12, 2009 and of course is "cute as a button". Mark and Kathryn are looking forward to going to Australia in June to attend the International Lions Club Convention where they will be supporting Dr. Jim Schrock for International Director.

The Beta Chapter appreciates all the efforts from their sister's that helped with the From Vicksburg With Love and Founder's Day events. Both, gatherings were wonderful and will hold special memories. Also, thanks to Marie Hernandez and the other Beta Chapter officers for giving of their time this year. Beta is planning to participate in a beading activity for the April meeting at Art & Soul and will have a potluck in May.

Marie Hernandez is still on cloud nine over the birth of a great granddaughter, Helena Marie hernandez, born February 16, 2010. Parents are Robert and Carrie Hernandez of McLean, VA. Don't be surprised if she drags out a Grandma Photo Album.

Ginny Horvath and husband John visited her sister and brother-in-law in Sarasota, FL. "Their health was not good so we went a little earlier in March to visit them in rehab. They have now moved over closer to their daughter in the Ft. Lauderdale area in Assisted Living Accommodations. But we did have nice chats each day we visited them and we saw them twice a day. We enjoyed our time with them.

Tracy Trichell from the Beta Chapter has been keeping busy at work and with her family. Her husband, Tommy is busy working the Outage at Grand Gulf. The entire family will be thankful when the outage is over so that they all will have more time to spend together and that Tommy will get a break. Their, daughter Alexandra is finishing up the 11th Grade, she was part of the Stage Crew for the plan and is playing tennis at Warren Central. Alexandra will be Confirmed in Christ this Spring. Their sons Thomas and James will be finishing up the 3rd grade at St. Francis. Both, boys went to the District Reading Fair and they finished playing basketball and have started playing baseball. Tracy is very pourd of her family and loves them very much as well as her Mother, Linda Christian and the rest of her family. She would like to wish her family, friends and neighbors, Peace.

Linda Christian from the Beth Chapter recently celebrated two of her grand-children's birthdays. Durand turned 7 in January and Kimberlynn turned 10 in March which allowed her to spend time with her other grandchildren, Alexandra, Thomas and James as well as other family members celebrating at the Skating Rink and El Sombrero.

Vicksburg Delta Chapter

We were saddened to hear of the death of Mary Glatt, Delta sister Jane Glatt Brock's mother, on Marcy 25. Our sympathies are extended to Jane and her family.

Joan Morgan and husband Hal looked forward to warmer and drier weather when they visited her brother at Captiva Island, FL, in mid-March. Unfortunately, it was too cold to dip the toes in the Gulf waters and too wet and blustery for golf most days. Enroute home they visited with friends who were in thier wedding 43 years ago and found that the cold and wet followed them to Venice, FL.

Josephine Peterson's son Will, married Karie Pompelia, in the presence of their families on February 13 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Meridian, MS. Karie is a special ed teacher in Lauderdale County and Will is an agent with the Department of Publice Safety. His twin, John, came from Sahuarita, AZ, for the ceremony. His brother Richard and his family also attended from Anderson, SC. John stayed a week after the wedding and he and Josephine took a day trip to the Delta where they visited the B. B. King Museum and enjoyed lunch with cousins in Indianola. They had dinner at Morgan Freeman's Restaurant, Madidi's and enjoyed blues music at Ground Zero in Clarksdale. Josephine spent Easter with her brother and his family in Jackson.

Vicksburg Omega Chapter

Myrtle Curro-Alvarado is celebrating the birth of her newest grandchild. Her son Jerome and his wife Caroline in Natchez had a precious baby boy, Kee Anthony, on Valentine's Day. Then it was over to Brandon to celebrate her granddaughter Allie's third birthday on the 19th. And, Myrtle and her husband Bobby have just returned from New York where they saw the revival of the play Boys in the Band, as well as Wicked and Memphis, and took in John Epperson's performance singing and playing the piano at the jazz club Birdland - John is originally from Hazlehurst, MS. The weather was just perfect for walking and shopping while Vicksburg was experiencing the recent snow!

Pat Stamm had surgery on her foot and recuperated at Olive Branch Nursing Home in Tallulah, LA, until she could return back home. The cast was on her foot for approximately six weeks.

Marian Phillips and her husband were invited to the MS Delta to the Christmas Place Plantation and Hunting Club mid January for another deer and hog hunt. No deer nor hog was harvested but had a great time trying! Marian also took a friend, Sharon Petro, from TN, to turkey hunt at her camp, Jasper Bottom, for five days in March. They saw and heard turkeys gobble but were not close enough to make a shot. Marian’s brother, Marion Jr., was hospitalized again in March in ICU, but has returned home recovering from his stay. On April 3, 2010, Marian Phillips and her husband, Bob, celebrated their 22nd Wedding Anniversary. On Friday, April 2, their names were called as winners on River 101 Radio Station and the prize package included, one night's stay at Candlewood Suites, a flower arrangement from Tina's Flowers and Gifts and at DiamondJacks Casino/Hotel, a dinner at DJ's Steakhouse valued at $50.00. Also, she received a beautiful arrangements of spring flowers from her PAK, Omega Chapter secret sister. They are looking forward to enjoying their special day and all the prize gifts and flowers!

Ina Whittington, her daughter, Rhonda and granddaughter, Katherine, will be taking Floyd, Ina’s husband to Birmingham, AL, to the VA Institute for the Blind on the Campus of the University of Alabama, Monday, April 5. Floyd will be there for 6 to 12 weeks to help him cope with his handicap.

Ina’s daughter-in-law, (Mary Charlene) Charlie, her son’s wife, was in ICU at River Region. She is now back home now recuperating.

Joan Donovan and husband, Mike, welcomed their second grandchild, Aiden Luke, born December 22, 2009, to Jessica and Kenny Keen.

Mike and Joan traveled to Tucson, AZ, March 17-27 to a model airplane contest (Vintage Stunt Championship). Mike flies in the competition. Some contestants come from other countries. They also enjoyed visiting with friends they have made over the last few years that come from different states to the contest. They went to two parties that were put on by two couples that live in Tucson. Their homes were beautiful. The also ate at some good restaurants. The scenery in Tucson is really pretty. They had a good time.

Jane Loboda is recovering well from knee surgery she had back in February.

Vera Brown’s daughter, Angela, is still taking chemo and has good and bad days.

On April 24th Sorority members (Vera Brown, Ina Whittington, Myrtle Alvarado, Katherine Turcotte and Marian Phillips) will be celebrating with other classmates who will be in town for their 50th Class Reunion (Class of 1960 - SFXA & SAHS) at the Alumni Banquet at St. Michael Catholic Church Parish Hall.

Our Chapter initiated three more new members at our March meeting at Frances Miller‘s lovely home on Laura Lake Drive. They are Becky Towne, Louise Herrod and Pat Tinney. Congratulations and welcome sorority sisters!

Our Founder's Day celebration was hosted yesterday at the lovely downtown loft home of Brenda and Malcolm Allred. We visited with our sorority sisters from other chapters and enjoyed delicious food and drinks. Their home was full of lovely antiques and collectibles and were gracious enough to let us take pictures. Ms. Sue Rowlett (Alpha Chapter) greeted us at the front door of the Adolph Rose Antiques Store and took us up on the elevator to the 3rd floor loft of their home. Everyone who attended had a wonderful and delightful time visiting and meeting new members in our sorority. The event was hosted by Alpha Chapter.

Ellis Koury Honored "With Love"

More than 100 people attended the fourth To Vicksburg With Love event Tuesday afternoon to enjoy entertainment and witness a memorial in honor of the late “mayor of Washington Street.”

With a theme of Rainbow and Roses, the event, sponsored by the Pi Alpha Kappa Sorority, was held at the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation and included a catered lunch and entertainment by pianist and accordionist Janusz Szlubowska.

“It was a great crowd,” SCHF Executive Director Annette Kirklin said. Coordinator Frances Koury, whose late husband was honored during the event, agreed on the success, remarking, “It was wonderful.”

Szlubowska, a Polish immigrant and classical musician, entertained with tunes and melodies from the piano and accordion. He was joined on stage by his daughter, Marta, the concert mistress for the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra.

They played such familiar tunes as music from “The Sound of Music.”

Veronica Joerg, a first-time guest at the luncheon event, said, “It was wonderful. The violin and piano are my favorite two instruments.”

As a gift from Danish couple Henning and Inge Deichman a U.S. flag was presented to the foundation in memory of the late Ellis Koury, a Washington Street merchant for more than 50 years. Ellis Koury died in 2008 at the age of 93.

During the presentation, Kirklin read aloud the words on a plaque signed by President Barack Obama honoring Ellis Koury’s military achievement. He was a veteran of World War II.

“The Deichmans wanted to do something for us,” said Connie Koury Hosemann, the Kourys’ younger daughter, who presented the flag.

“They wanted to do something where my daddy would be remembered in the community.” The Deichmans are longtime-family friends of the Kourys.

They have also been for 17 years the employer of Kathy Koury Knudsen, the Kourys’ older daughter who lives in San Francisco.

Neither the Deichmans nor Knudsen could attend.

“This was a wonderful event, very fitting,” said First Baptist Church associate pastor Jim Hess, who led in the Pledge of Allegiance and a rendition of the “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Hess remembers Ellis Koury as “a pleasant person, a real gentleman and always welcoming to everyone.”

“He’d be so proud,” Hosemann said. “He was such a neat person. He was a part of the greatest generation. He saw gravel roads to the Internet during his lifetime.”

The flag will remain on permanent display in the SCHF auditorium, Kirklin said.

The Valentine-themed concert was one of the Four Seasons of the Arts presentations.

This program was today at noon at the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation, my old alma mater, Class of 1959. It was a lovely luncheon with our sorority sisters of Pi Alpha Kappa. The program was preformed by Janusz Szlubowska and his lovely wife Danuta from Poland. In addition to classical music with his wife and as a soloist, he also has a great talent for improvisation and plays popular piano and accordion music. "To Vicksburg with Love" is Tuesday, February, 9, at noon. It will be at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center again. Proceeds go to SCHC and to the PAK Scholarship Fund. Cost is $12.00. This will be a catered affair. We do need PAK members to act as hostesses and greeters. Call 601-631-2997 for reservations.

Founder's Day is Saturday, March 13. More information to follow.

News From The PAK Chapters

Denver Sisters

The last Chapter meeting was in October. November’s Thanksgiving dinner was cancelled due to heavy snow here in Denver, but our crazy Colorado weather gave us a beautiful December and we were able to meet at President Elly Danko’s for a lovely Christmas social.

Gennie McCloskey resigned officially this year, but has visited her sorority sisters many times, weather permitting.

Betty Shea has been busy this year caring for her husband but after a successful surgery, he is now 100% better. His renewed health has allowed them to travel this year and they paid a visit to their son’s alpaca farm in Illinois. They were greeted by three new baby alpacas; one of them was born pitch black to a pure white mother! Betty also mailed our Christmas donations to the Salvation Army and the Denver Rescue Mission.

Elly Danko is doing great now, but had quite a year full of medical issues. She was unable to make her yearly trip to Germany, but is already looking forward to next year’s visit. Around the November timeframe, she finally started feeling better and was able to bake her famous Christmas cookies. She was even well enough to join Isolde and her daughter for the Madrigal dinner.

Walburga Salazar continues to help the elderly and disabled people in her apartment building by running errands for them or driving them to various appointments. Walburga suffered two losses this year: one of the residents passed away, and she also lost her beloved cat. Good news also came to Walburga when she received news that her son, Richard, underwent a successful quadruple bypass surgery.

Isolde Meyer was also slowed down this year with a broken vertebra. She stayed with her daughter, Melissa, for five months, but is now back in her own home and doing great. She recovered by December and managed to bake 16 different varieties of Christmas cookies totaling over 1400 pieces! Isolde also suffered the loss of family and friends this year.

VICKSBURG ALPHA CHAPTER

Lucille Ables went to Georgia to see her newest great-grandson and her granddaughter’s beautiful new home in Senoia, GA. She saw her sister in Canton, GA, and her sister from Ft. Payne, AL. All went to the Apple Barn and brought back lots of “good eats.” She had a great time.

Pam Gee has been on the road once again. She hasn’t had time to sort through her 620 photos from her trip to Ireland in late September because she flew to Richmond, VA, to celebrate her oldest grandson Michael’s 11th birthday. Soon after came a church retreat, then a wonderful week in Virginia getting acquainted with her new granddaughter, Addison. It was back to Virginia for Christmas where son Scott and his family joined them for a few days after Christmas.

Frances Koury writes: “I am glad to report some "happy news". Kathy spent a week with me at Thanksgiving. She always brightens the corners----Granddaughter Dayna, spent Christmas and my grandson Aaron Koury and his bride, Elizabeth of Dallas, Texas, spent a few days after Christmas with me. I was able to be a part of all of the festivities surrounding their beautiful wedding ceremony in Dallas on October 24. They spent two weeks in Ireland on their honeymoon and haven't come down out of the clouds yet! What a joy it was to have them here. I am trying to again help coordinate "A Day With The Symphony" with The Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, Friday, January 29, 2010, at 7 p.m. at the convention center. A Free Concert courtesy of generous sponsors. Please plan to attend.

Twenty-eight joined Jean McKnight for Thanksgiving dinner, including three children plus grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Sue Rowlett and her son traveled to Bossier City, LA, to visit Sue’s sister, Opal Hill.

It was a quiet Christmas for Bernett Tucker and her husband, Guy. They spent the week at the beach at Gulf Shores with daughter Debbie and her family.

Lois Waldbauer threw a few snowballs up in northern Ohio over Thanksgiving. Loved it! They had 28 for dinner, so there were no leftovers.

Christmas was very good for Illma Williams and her husband, Milton. They spent time with family and friends and were blessed with good health.

VICKSBURG BETA CHAPTER

Margharita Davis and hubby Bill enjoyed their 3 children: son Key and his daughter Megan of Vicksburg; daughter Margaret and her husband Billy Smith with sons Trey, Aubrey and Hunter from Brandon; son Lee with friend Rachel Micklethwait from Austin, Texas for Thanksgiving at their home on Redbone Road. They were celebrating also their son Key’s continued good health. He has had Chronic Leukemia since October ’08. Everyone returned for a joyous Christmas of much love, good health and great food.

Marie Hernandez spent Thanksgiving holidays in Birmingham with son Bob and his wife Joy. She also visited with Granddaughter Susan Ray and great grands Walker and Mary Douglas Ray. Bob was named one of the FAB 40 as part of the 40th anniversary celebration of the School of Health Professions at UAB. Bob will go to Armenia in February to teach for several weeks at the American University. All of that is the good news. The bad news is that she had to replace the heating and cooling system in the house two days before Christmas. Then her microwave went out and she had to get a new one. It was a hectic time but son Bob came and brought presents and Marie was invited to share the holiday with our sister Kalar Fultz. They talked about our old memories of PAK and shared a few laughs along with some misted eyes. Kalar is doing well for someone 97 years old. Kalar's son Kent and his wife Linda come from Brandon to be sure that Kalar has a wonderful celebration. I hope you have a wonderful 2010. Along with our problems God has richly blessed us.

VICKSBURG DELTA CHAPTER

Helene Benson and husband Rich enjoyed our Christmas in Savannah, GA. She does have new PAK pins available if anyone would like to purchase. They are $20.15 each.

Tricia Copelin and her husband, Larry, have a lot going on right now--they are adding a big addition onto a house they have in Oxford, and will soon be moving up to Oxford for retirement. (They bought the land when they were seniors at Ole Miss in 1973, with the long-range plan to retire there!) They plan on using their handy-man skills to do a lot of the inside finish work on the new addition themselves. Other exciting news for the Copelin family is the expected arrival this spring of their first grandson, due in March to their youngest son, Jamie Copelin, and his wife, Michelle. The Copelin's youngest granddaughter, Carley Copelin, will be 10 years old on January 7, 2010. Carley's parents are Tricia and Larry's oldest son, Dirk, and his wife, Melissa Copelin. Both sons and their families now live in Vicksburg. Jamie moved back to Vicksburg with Michelle from Denver in August.

Joan Morgan and her husband entertained visitors from India. Hal stayed with them in February while leading a Rotary Exchange Group. In October their daughter Michelle, treated her dad, brother, and mom to a long weekend in St. Louis. They saw a St. Louis Cardinals game, enjoyed an Italian dinner on The Hill, saw where she first lived, and visited Grant's Farm, which included the Clydesdale horse farm and Ulysses Grant's home. Hal and Joan visited Savannah for a reunion of officers who served in Germany in the late 60's, followed by a stop in Charleston to visit her nephew and family. She is recovering from another hip replacement and hopes to soon be gardening again.

Josephine Peterson accompanied by her twin sons, John and Will, spent Christmas with Richard, Jodi, and their four children in South Carolina. It was John’s first visit home at Christmas since moving to Arizona three years ago. It was wonderful seeing Christmas through the eyes of four excited little ones. After Christmas, “the men” and Josephine took an excursion to Helen, Georgia, for a day. Helen is a quaint little German town with interesting shops and delicious food. We enjoyed a carriage ride and learned the town’s history. It was fun to be together. Before leaving for South Carolina, Josephine hosted the Delta Chapter in her home for their annual Christmas party.

Joann White reports that she attended the Fall Choral Concert on November 5 at the WCHS Auditorium where she enjoyed her grandson Paul singing with the Madrigals, the Concert Men’s Choir, and Total Sound. She writes, “Family gathered for Thanksgiving. I cooked for twelve and I have just learned to cook for one! I spent two weeks in December with my sister, Tannie Bryan. We attended a Christmas Tea given by Bells and Books on December 5. On December 6, I attended First Baptist Church’s Dinner Theatre for their presentation of “Only Love.” We enjoyed shopping in Oxford, MS, and Collierville, TN. December 12th, I attended Singe Feaste at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center with my son, Ronny. It was delightful! On December 24th, family gathered again for celebrating our Savior’s birth. Happy New Year!”

VICKSBURG OMEGA CHAPTER

John Matthew Hossley was born November 24, 2009 at Woman's Hospital. John weighed 7 lbs 9 oz and was 20 1/4 inches long. He is the son of Matthew and Katie Hossley, Omega Chapter. John is also the grandson of Anita Hossley, Omega Chapter and is also welcomed by an older brother, James. Congratulations to the new parents and grandparents. Anita Hossley traveled to Ocean Springs, MS after celebrating Thanksgiving at home. She and other family members attended the wedding of her niece, Stacie Zorn who was married Nov. 28.

Marian Love Phillips and her husband Bob were invited to the Christmas Place Plantation and Hunting Club in the MS Delta near Eden, MS, for a hog hunt on December 5, 2009. Marian did not see a hog while her husband, Bob, shot a 145lb. boar hog. This was his first hog to ever harvest. Congrats to Bob! Marian’s husband, Bob, also suffered a mild heart attack on December 9 and is recovering well. Marian flew to Fredericksburg, VA, on December 22 through the 29th, to spend Christmas week with her youngest daughter, Marian “Suzi” Suzanne, her hubby, Dennis and granddaughter, Emma who is 2-½ years old. This was their Christmas gift to her. Marian's brother, Marion E. Love, Jr., was hospitalized for congestive heart and kidney failure on New Year's Day. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

Katherine Turcotte and her husband, Roy, became great grandparents again - Paisley, born August 19, 2009 in Albuquerque, NM. Congrats to the parents, grandparents and great grandparents! Roy had shoulder and hand surgery on October 6th and he is still slowly but surely recovering from his stroke he had in 2007. In August, Katherine was elected Regional Vice President for the Southeast Region of NAADAC - The Association for Addiction Professionals.

Joan Donovan and her husband, Mike, traveled to the Smokey Mountains in October. The leaves were at their peak and were beautiful. They also saw three cub bears playing in a tree. Her husband, Mike took a lot of pictures of them and two were published in the Vicksburg Post.

Myrtle Alvarado and her husband, Bobby made a trip to Charleston and Chapel Hill for his Citadel "mini-reunion" in September, then drove on to Washington, DC, where we had a wonderful time sightseeing - the National Cemetery and Tomb of the Unknown for the changing of the guard - so very moving; Smithsonian Space and Science Museum; National Holocaust Museum; took the train into New York, visited the Museum of Natural History, and were able to see a number of plays. They ate at some wonderful restaurants and experienced almost every mode of transportation - great experience! They weren't back in Vicksburg but a few days when Bobby had emergency surgery for gallbladder removal. He breezed right through and is having no problems at all with diet - how lucky can he get! Looking forward to another grandchild in February. Her youngest son, Jerome and his wife Caroline are expecting a little boy, and she can’t wait to baby-sit!

Connie Greer fell and suffered a broken hip in her home in Marion Park and is recovering slowly.

General Omega Chapter News:

Elizabeth Smith, Curator, at the National Park Museum, spoke to Omega Chapter at their November meeting. Elizabeth's topic was preservation of cherished items, photographs, and collectibles. Her presentation was not only interesting but also very helpful. Ms Smith distributed handouts with further information on her topic.

During October members brought Halloween items and school supplies to the meeting for Olivia Lee's kindergarten class at Warrenton Elementary. Members of Omega chapter brought nonperishable food items for the Storehouse Community Food Pantry at the chapter's November meeting. For their December project, members adopted needy children from a list provided by DHS.

Our Christmas Party was held on Saturday, December 12, at 7:00 p.m. at Eli's Treehouse Restaurant & Sports Grill on Cherry Street. We ordered off the menu and afterwards opened our presents and the husbands/guest played dirty Santa. We had our Christmas Party tonight and it was a huge success at Eli's Tree House and Grill.

Our Christmas party is 7 pm, Sat., Dec. 12 at Eli's Tree House.

Please remember to bring your gifts for Laura's kids.

Spouses or dates need to bring a gag gift for dirty Santa.

New members (rushees) need to bring a gift ($10- $20) for a gift swap.

Also, remember to bring your Secret Sister gifts. We will learn the identity of our secret sisters at the party. Then we will draw names for our 2010 (Jan. - Dec.) secret sisters. This is optional. If you feel like you can't participate at this time just let me know. Secret Sisters usually receive special gifts for birthdays, anniversaries, and at Christmas. "Happies" and/or cards are usually given at other times.

Omega Chapter Christmas Party

We will be having our Christmas Party on Saturday, December 12, at 7:00 p.m. at Eli's Treehouse Restaurant & Sports Grill on Cherry Street. We will order off the menu and afterwards open our presents and the husbands/guest will play dirty Santa. We are all looking forward to our celebration and will have a band to entertain us during our Christmas Party. I want to take this opportunity to wish all my Sisters in PAK a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

November Meeting

We will meet at Janey Seabergh's home this coming Wed., Nov. 4. Janey's subdivision is off Lee Rd. She lives at 201 Grinder's Place. Our philanthropic is non-perishable foods for the food pantry. This will be a model meeting and our rushees are invited. Shannon, Jane, Andrea, and Laura should call their little sisters and invite them to the meeting since we don't have email info yet.

Helene said the PAK pins should be in soon. They should cost about $20.20 each. If anyone wants to buy one, please let me know so I can inform Helene.

Our Sorority Sisters Grave Site

I was told that Barbara Ables Kinnebrew's tombstone was in place by her family recently. While at the cemetery today visiting my son's grave, I walked down to Barbara's grave and took these pictures. The tombstone is made out of pink granite stone and very nice. She is missed by all her family, friends and sorority sisters. May Barbara rest in peace! Amen.
